  •  the actual condition is called "cushings" - and it (3+ / 0-)

occurs in dogs, too.  it is a tumor on the pituitary gland.  fortunately, in horses, it can be controlled with pergolide (a drug that was once used to treat parkinson's but has too many serious side effects for humans).

unfortunately, cushings also is a main trigger in laminitis - a condition where the horse's coffin bone separates from the laminae holding it inside the hoof - that is what caused sani to be diagnosed with cushings (after his first vet totally misread the labwork and said he was clear in 2011).

if horses make it through the laminitic episode, they stand a chance at long term management of the cushings with the drug - so far, sani hasn't had a bad day on his feet - that is what we want.  right now, he has casts on his tootsies to keep the hoof wall from separating further and we are waiting for him to grow new feet - that takes about a year to totally grow the new foot from coronet band (think fingernail base) to the ground.

he is on a paddock of very soft shavings (tiny tiny flakes) that are like walking on a soft cushion and is doing very well (knock wood!)

okay - that's the technical explanation - and, i totally got kovie's "that's so wrong!" comment - but sani just loves all the attention he has gotten with his "do" - had i thought about it, though, we'd have been doing an obama symbol - and i'm still thinking of putting the dk flag on his side when it's time to clip more!

    are ya up for it?

Thanks for the explanation & information. You guys are very caring 2-legs.

Best Wishes on control of the Cushings & laminitis; I'm glad he's able to be comfortable so far - laminitis is a tough condition to deal with, pain-wise.

Something that doesn't make good sense, makes bad sense. That means someone is being deliberately hurtful & selfish. Look for motives behind actions & words.

        diagnosis.

the paddock is filled with dorris mini flake shavings - it is like walking on a quilted comforter!  everyone wants to lie down and make shavings angels - sani does!

when i asked ashton about easy ride boots, he laughed and said no need, he has an "easy ride" paddock!

i do have an area of just mats where he can stand if he wants to, but he loves the shavings.  they are raked and smoothed daily and about a week after a big rain, i turn over several inches to let them dry.  the amazing thing is that they filter the "wet spots" and there is no odor!  to pick poop is a piece of cake - the shavings fall right through, leaving a really clean paddock!

EdriesShop Is it kind? is it true? is it necessary?
