    Republicans are absolutely convinced that under Democratic presidencies, deficits go up while under Republican presidencies the deficit goes down. They believe this like people believe 2+2=4 or believe that water is wet.

    Of course, the opposite is true. Under Carter, the deficit was fairly low. Reagan ran on the deficit, and the deficit exploded. George H.W. Bush took the deficit to new levels. Then we had a surplus under Clinton. Then GWB came in, and brought us new record deficits. Dick Cheney said "Reagan taught us that deficits don't matter."

    The more you cut taxes, the more Republicans scream about how high taxes are getting. The more you cut regulation, the more Republicans scream about how much more of a burden regulation has become.

    The media is disinclined to contradict the GOP version of events. FOX News is the worst of a bad lot, but the others aren't a lot better. It's why so many people turn to The Daily Show, Jon Stewart does what the news is supposed to do, check facts and provide context.

    The wolfpack eats venison. The lone wolf eats mice.
