  •  I Now Live In A Place Where I Don't Even (8+ / 0-)

think to lock my front door. Now I used to live in a place, well not so safe. In a ten year period I was mugged twice, car broken into, girlfriends car stolen and never found, house broke into.

I thought about getting a gun for protection.

A good friend of mine maybe said one of the smarter things ever said to me:

Do you want your own gun taken from you and used against you?
Honestly I'd not really thought about that .... and no I didn't want that to happen. So I just put in a better alarm system :).

I used to carry my service revolver in a shoulder holster - with dud rounds - for precisely this reason, as there had been a couple of instances of cops having their weapons taken away by bad guys, and one of them wound up getting shot with his own weapon.

My real weapon was in a belt holster in my back, and a small .38 around my ankle for a Hail Mary weapon.

So really the only situation where a gun would clearly help me was where I was being somehow lethally threatened but at a distance from the attacker.

Now what would that be? An urban gang shooter or a sniper maybe. A military laser beam.

We do have those problems but the odds of my facing the rare threat situation where I could shoot at no risk of being disarmed is below shark bite risk.

he took it out of my hand and said:

Tommy never point a gun at somebody unless you plan to use it.
That was the second reason I never bought that gun. Not sure I could pull the trigger.
