ending opposition to EU fee on aircraft carbon emissions as one of the things that the Obama team can do w/out Congress -- even though the Congress would likely, again, vote against it.

The fee is (a) relatively small, (b) entirely in line with fighting climate change, (c) something that we should embrace rather than fight.

While I still fly, I have worked to reduce.  I've been able, over the past five years, get over 100,000 miles of work-related flights shifted into teleconferences/remote meetings.  There are, however, real 'must do' where physical presence matters -- doing due diligence work on a technical system, being able to pull things apart/etc; giving a keynote presentation and then having the chance to interact w/the 1500 attendees over a week-long conference; etc ...

Not all trips, of course, are as 'easy' to justify.  I remember one "must do" for work (got in trouble for arguing that this was a wasteful trip), where three of us flew cross-country to give a briefing to a government official on a trip whose office was about three miles from mine.  He even said something like: "Couldn't you have come to my office for this presentation so that we could have a longer and more in-depth conversation?"  I'd tried to advocate that traveling out to be part of that larger mtng was stupid but my boss wanted face-time with execs and to have the execs see that this guy knew who we were and respected our opinion.  There was roughly 20 tons of carbon (I flew economy, my two colleagues business class), perhaps $7k of travel costs, and two days committed for a 15 minute session that would have been more substantive if it had been a 15 minute drive for a two-hour meeting.

    •  We need to hold a global summit on global warming. (0+ / 0-)

      Where shall we hold it?
      Iceland?
      Rio?
      Capetown?

You can't make this stuff up.

outdoors, it could be on formerly-glaciated land, or next to our new-tallest waterfall (opened up by a retreating glacier), or our former-tallest.  Or if indoors, simply from Reykjavík in any building with a good view of Snæfell (Snow Mountain) on a clear day, whose retreating glacier revealed the mountain's peak for the first time in recorded history last summer.  The glacier is expected to be altogether gone in 20-30 years.
