  •  Hard to argue with one side of this, (6+ / 0-)

but it is only one side of it. Fact is, many progressive petitions have gotten attention this way.

There ARE, in addition to the crack pots, "Americans of all stripes," who earnestly try to be heard through petitions to the White House. And, the media pays attention to these petitions is they get big enough.

Let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater.  This petition was summarily taken down, as it should of been.  And imo, everyone who signed it should have their names passed on to the FBI.  At least the crack pots leave obvious foot prints with this, rather than just foaming at the mouth all over the internet.

    •  Admittedly, I'm sure a big part of it is that it's (4+ / 0-)

only the funny / crazy ones that get lots of media attention.  You're right, the petitions probably help some people.  I just wish it wasn't also an excuse to be a crackpot / secessionist / snark. The country has real problems, but instead of dealing with those problems, this is what we do.  The President asks for suggestions, and he gets "Kill yourself!", "Deport Piers Morgan!", "Build a Death Star!".  Meh.

that we can't outlaw crack pots.  And believe me, I share your frustration with this crap.  But again, to concentrate on just the negative is not the whole picture here.

that sends the petitions in violation to a separate folder that is overseen by the FBI or Secret Service. I don't think that would be hard.

Something that doesn't make good sense, makes bad sense. That means someone is being deliberately hurtful & selfish. Look for motives behind actions & words.

        •  Considering how (0+ / 0-)

the petition in question was taken down very quickly, it is apparent that there is some sort of oversight.

The question here seems to be what to about petitions that are overtly illegal.
