the EU also a reasonable leftist stand? Isn't the EU pushing austerity in places like Greece, Spain and Portugal and causing untold hardship for the people in those countries?

While Democrats work to get more people to vote, Republicans work to ensure those votes won't count.

I've seen by people close to the party of theft and pillage says that the Afriye idea is absolutely laughable, but that it may be possible that he's the stalking horse candidate who can bring the leader down, in the sam way that Thatcher was, and then lets the major figures compete for the new leadership position

These countries are free to default anytime they want. The EU could not stop them if they wished to do so.

What they are not free to do, however, is spend other people's money indefinitely, because the lenders of that money will simply refuse to keep lending.

For the countries in question, there is one kind of austerity, or another. There is no third option.

Turns out when you control your own currency you can inflate your way out of debt.  Like all of southern europe used to do.  Shit would be really crazy for a year or two, no doubt, but greece is now selling its natural and national treasures to people rich on boatloads of their own central banks' printed cash (check out the stock market and how effective QE has been, that stock value is just asset inflation).

in the right place.  You've got to inject cash at the bottom of the economic ladder during a recession, not the top.  That increases demand for a whole range of products that 1. exist and 2. we know how to provide.  Tossing money into the top can increase demand for...what?  The occasional private jet. Expensive electronics manufactured in China or Korea.  And, of course, investment assets.  And when you don't have increased demand for real goods, the only thing you can invest in is the result, purely, of interest seeking behavior, further weakening the bottom by siphoning off capital.

    •  Yeah, my guess would be (0+ / 0-)

that both leftists and rightists would be anti-EU at this point:  the leftists b/c they hate austerity and the rightists because they hate the Continent of Europe.
