  •  As a general rule, hotter substances produce (4+ / 0-)

shorter wavelengths with higher energy. This is a key part of global warming theory; the sun radiates at the earth in many frequencies, but a lot of the energy is in the visible frequencies. The energy radiates (NOT reflected) by the earth back to space is longer infrared wavelengths. A greenhouse gas is one that is (nearly) transparent to visible light but absorbs some or all  infrared wavelengths.

The reason a blue-ray disc has more content than a standard DVD is that blue has a shorter wavelength than red, so a blue laser can discern a finer resolution than a red one.

Economics is a social *science*. Can we base future economic decisions on math?

    •  That's right. (3+ / 0-)

The greenhouse gases trap the energy within the atmosphere. Ideally, we would have an atmosphere allowing a balance of energy received by Earth and energy re-radiated back to space. The net balance now is toward less re-radiated back to space. We are getting warmer.
