Rather then "I'm a year older" I think of it as "I made it another year, and look at the blessings I have brought with me."
In about a month I'm having my annual "event" which I think of as being another year wiser.

I celebrate it playing bingo at the local casino where they let you use your birthday "day" as an extra free space, so I'll get to mark "4" as if it's already called (birthday 3/4) so I look forward to it every year.  Others dread the reminder of our mortality.

There already is class warfare in America. Unfortunately, the rich are winning.

...when you've suffered through, and (partially) recovered from a nearly fatal disease.

There are few privileges that people take more for granted, I think, then good health - until they lose it.  I think it's just the human condition...nobody WANTS to be sick, after all.

After nearly dying of something, the birthdays are pretty weak tea as far as reminders of mortality go.  Each year I even MAKE it to another birthday seems like a gift, and I treat it as such.

      •  That absolutely is a game changer (3+ / 0-)

and changes the perspective that someone has about lifes other obstacles.  Somehow they seem much smaller in comparison.
