    My 8th grade public-schooled daughter is in a smallish, very tight click with a boy who identifies as bi or gay, depending on the moment. Granted, we are in the northeast, which helps, and he is a charming and seemingly stable kid, but there is a lot to be said about a phalanx of stalwart friends who guard your back and help sweep you into the mainstream. No one in this group would ever, ever allow anyone to bully him outright and they've even gotten into facedowns with kids who just randomly use the phrase "that's so gay" as a term of derision. Even my little daughter, when she hears her classmates say things like that, gets into indignant mode over it and makes them stop.

    It helps that my kids grew up with gay uncles and cousins and friends, some married and some with kids, all loved.

    But things are changing, I think.
