  •  not sure how the gun would have helped her (21+ / 0-)

since we don't know what happened. Maybe a better example where the result is known would work. Or maybe it is a good example and not fleshed out.

I'm glad your gun makes you feel safer. I hope you don't take more risks (such as a walk like that woman) because you do have a gun and you feel safer. It seems inpossible to think someone wouldn't, since they feel safer.

I was trained in self defense (an antimugging class) yet one time I was walking on a paved path from an elementary schoool to my neighborhood-it was broad daylight-and a man attacked me. I brought my knee up to stamp on his foot and he grabbed my leg and twisted it, getting me onto the ground.

I can't really see how having a gun could have helped. I didn't know he was mugging me until we were a few feet apart (he was walking in opposite direction on the path), he didn't "look" suspicious, and it was broad daylight.I  wouldn't have time to have drawn a gun. I didn't apparently have time to even "draw" my leg.

    •  Reaction Speed Is Mostly In Your Genes. (7+ / 0-)

Mine is woefully slow; though as an instigator I can move at lightning speed, I've beaten international talent when all I had to do was act without needing to respond. If I have to respond, I couldn't win my own city block. For the record I'm talking activities other than gun play.

So that's the thing. If I attack you, you're in deep shit because of how fast I can act when you aren't expecting me, but I've preplanned facing you and odds are you are somewhere near normal reaction time.

A recent diary pointed out that law enforcement misses their target 83% of the time in real life shooting at perps.

And they train for this constantly.
