  •  Sadly this doesn't surprise me (6+ / 0-)

Quite a few years back I started doing some work as a fundraiser for an organization going door to door in wealthy neighborhoods.  Me and a partner would divvy up a neighborhood and go door to door looking for donations. That job lasted for about a day and a half.  In that time I was told to get off people's lawn at least 10 times (before opening my mouth), I was threatened with a police calls at least 5 times, I had the actual police called on me twice and I had a man behind a dark screen who may or may not have been holding a pistol tell me "don't take another step."

All I would ever attempt to do is walk up to people's door and ring the door bell!  I would say 10% of the time I would start to walk to the door and here a threat before I even made it past the boundary of the lawn.

That was one of those days when I realized how far we still had to come on the issue of race.  How much fear permeates suburbia.  My partner, she raised about $200.00.  I raised $0 and learned I needed a new part-time job.  Oh by the way, I was collecting money for Cancer research.

This is the America we live in.  Personally, I don't drive on people's driveway to turn around or knock on the door of anyone I don't know.  I don't want to be the next person shot.  (Just for clarification, I know the GPS made a mistake here - so this could have happened to me as well, no matter how careful/frightened I've become.).
