  •  My mom was a Republican (7+ / 0-)

    and always voted for school bonds or tax increases for education. She said  her kids went to public schools so she owed it.  Of course, she always said she never minded paying her taxes either, since she used the services, like roads, etc., those taxes paid for.  She just wanted her taxes used wisely and not wasted, but never objected to paying them.  

    I suspect the only reason she was a Republican was because she was convinced they were tough on national defense.  Born in the '20s, many of her generation bought that bill of goods and it really, really mattered to them, due to events that occurred in their lifetime.

      ...she thought he was tricky enough to take on the Chinese.

      People have lots of reasons for voting the way they do & party loyalties are sometimes rooted in historical reasons that have nothing to do with the current state of that party. So it's important not to pre-judge people based on labels -- even self-selected labels.
