  •  That's absurd (0+ / 0-)
I think the white liberal privilege has struck again.
A lot of people hear have good things to see about our new Sen. Cowan, but he's never held elective office before. Frank was in the House for 30 years and chaired the Finance Committee. There are legitimate reasons for thinking he'd be more qualified for a short-term Senate appointment.

Republicans...think the American standard of living is a fine thing--so long as it doesn't spread to all the people. And they admire the Government of the United States so much that they would like to buy it. Harry S. Truman

    •  That's not the argument being made... (0+ / 0-)

It's all about how Gov. Deval is playing crony politics and how Mr. Cowan allegedly isn't  "qualified enough".

The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing online commenters that they have anything to say.-- B.F.

      •  Compared to a 30-year Congressman (0+ / 0-)

he isn't. What's the argument for why Cowan's the best choice?

And isn't naming your ex-chief-of-staff, whom most people in your state have never heard of, a pretty good definition of "crony politics."

The man is over 30, a US citizen and has experience working in the highest level of governance.  How does that not make his the best choice for a temporary appointment?

Funny, I thought liberal would be happy there's a black Democratic senator.  I stand corrected.

          •  If that's the test (0+ / 0-)

there are about 2,500 people in Massachusetts who meet that test. What makes him "best" of them? Heading the staff in the Governor's office has little to do with the U.S. Senate. It's not even the same "government."

Having a black Democratic senator is great, except for the fact that there were more experienced options at a critical time in our nation's history. Having just lost a very senior Senator, and lost Ted Kennedy only a few years ago, the last thing we need is to have another rookie during these crucial few months.

There is no racial component here at all, hard as you might try to create one. If John Conyers retired from the House and a white Democratic governor picked his white chief of staff over Conyers for a five-month stint in the Senate, I'd have the exact same view of it.
