    His methodology was poor, as the diarist notes:

    Cook found that ~1/3 of the positive respondents had inconsistencies in their answers to the 19 survey questions.
    And the UFO bit was cited tongue in cheek both here, and I suspect in Hemenway too.  The point was that false positives are real even for socially undesirable activities.  Defending yourself or your family with a gun is noble and heroic.  Who wouldn't want to report their wise choice to keep a gun handy had paid off?
