  •  This Is NOT A Unique Service; Just The Iceberg Tip (23+ / 0-)

I'm work in this sector (personal/private information, or "PPI"); and there are MANY services that do this type of thing. All the credit repositories (Equifax, Experian, Trans Union), and many others, such as: UConfirm.com, CoreLogic, Accusource, etc.

Anyone with authorization; and, folks that work in certain fields such as the law/law firms, employers (in general), debt collectors (the skip-tracing industry is a very large sub-sector of the data industry), private detectives and many others are LEGALLY allowed to do this in most states. If you're doing anything from applying for a job to joining a country club to making an application for membership in a co-op, chances are these types of services will be utilized. Just propose to your wife-to-be? Future-father-in-law calls a lawyer and "checks you out." Wealthy folks use these types of services to screen supposed social acquaintances, too! (Incredible, but quite true.) Yes, this stuff is highly abused! (And/or barely within the law, at best.)

MUCH of these activities occur within highly questionable areas of legality; but this sh*t goes on all the time. And, with real estate in a slump (the sector was a HUUUUGE profit center for all of these types of data/info repositories), these services are extending themselves as much as possible to make up for the revenue loss, too!

But, as any lawyer will tell you, the "juiciest" stuff is on WestLaw and Lexis Nexis! (Makes the other services, mentioned above, look like child's play!)

This is a HUGE, HUGE social/societal nightmare. PRIVACY IS HISTORY. The Rubicon has been crossed.
