    used by, for example, the "United Negro College Fund" and the baseball Negro Leagues, and by Martin Luther King, Jr. in his writings and speeches. (The informal n****r term was the pejorative.) So, at one time, was "colored," still used by the NAACP. "Black" and "African-American" came to be preferred by many people of color after King's death and the rise of the Black Power movement.
