  •  DHS has a considerable "personal protection" (7+ / 0-)

mission, the most notable being the United States Secret Service. The full list is at "Who Joined DHS" where you will also find the old Federal Protective Service. In the old days you were likely to see FPS cars providing some of the first line of our obligation to protect foreign embassies. The core responsibility for that lies with the Secret Service Uniformed Division.

With more than 1,300 officers today, the Uniformed Division is responsible for security at the White House Complex; the vice president's residence; the Department of the Treasury (as part of the White House Complex); and foreign diplomatic missions in the Washington, D.C., area.
So, yes, personal protection is a big part of the mission and it is a real stretch to conflate a perfectly proper English description for the function of "personal protection" of officials and federal workers with NRA and nut job military type weapon for private "personal protection."

The only foes that threaten America are the enemies at home, and those are ignorance, superstition, and incompetence. [Elbert Hubbard]
