    What people who use that argument like to overlook is that a criminal who has not followed the law becomes subject to legal consequence for merely having the gun.

      Against the laws to have an open container of alcohol in the vehilce - even if you aren't drinking, or drunk. But such laws presumably prevent some number of DUI incidents.
