Most people buy and unlocked phone and enjoy cheaper (and sometimes better) service.

The up-front investment is more but over 2+ years of use it is cheaper.

In fact, my unlocked iPhone cost more in China than it would in the USA (taxes) but my 3G service is less than half of US rates (in relative terms that's still expensive but tolerable).

In some places like Hong Kong or Korea, the service is a similar price but is really high bandwidth LTE so a bargain.

Subsidized phones have to be more expensive because someone has to finance it.

    What about my Daughter's future?
