    Good post. I should however point out that much of this decline is due to the precipitous decline in the US in automobile miles driven per person. This decline, as I have pointed out here and in other blogs, is due as much to techno-sociological changes (e.g. social media) as to any "environmental" awareness.

      it is a net positive, shows that technologies can affect the amount of carbon output, even indirectly, and it also shows that consumer behavior, sometime pooh-poohed as useless to attack,  can make a difference.

      Knowledge of what works, what we can change and still enjoy or lives, makes it easier to sell more change to the public.
