    Lately, I have been seeing paternalism wherever I go. This is the unspoken, condescending belief of some that "I know better than you do, what you need. I can and should speak for you."

    This takes the cake.

    In populous state such as California, there would probably be plenty of observers around, to make noise in the face of this outrage. In North Dakota, perhaps, not so much. So you are performing a really invaluable service today.

      Check out elwior's comment below the TJ, dealing with the very same issues.

      I will say that, around here, it's now far less likely that something like this would happen.  But that's nowhere near the case for a lot of tribes.  And I have to think that the great distances involved for a lot of the Northern tribes like those in the Dakotas provide an excuse and abet such misconduct.  it's a lot harder to fight for your kids when you have to travel 200 miles to the nearest town (especially with no gas money).
