  •  Get an Apple TV with airplay (1+ / 0-)

You can't get live MSNBC anymore that I can find (used to be on rockinrooster) but get the MSNBC app and and Apple TV.   IIRC Rachel has her own app on the appstore.    You can also watch Brian Williams if you are so inclined.

Seriously, the coolest $100 I have spent in a long time and I am not by any means an Apple fanboy, having made my living working for the competition.    The Apple TV is freaking magical, especially for somebody like me who does not have cable.    PBS has an app, we were watching Downton Abbey in full HD without a cable subscription, whenever we wanted and with the ability to pause and rewind.

I also use the same Apple TV to stream music through the house's in-ceiling speakers -- it happens to come with both HDMI and optical output so I have HDMI into the TV and Optical-Coax-A/D converter to my old amplifier that is hooked up to the speakers.     We then stream sirius and audiobooks throughout the house.    (Don't tell apple or they will probably disable dual output so you have to buy two of the boxes...)

Used to be that a house that you could walk around with a little device playing music and video wherever you wanted would cost over a million if it was even possible.

The only downside is Apple's silly hatred of flash, so a lot of apps that should work don't.   My wife is after me to get a MacBook air so we can stream those to our TV.

    •  Oh thank you for that! (0+ / 0-)

You lost me at Optical-Coax-A/D converter, but it sounds like something I need as my house came with speakers in the ceiling and I have no idea what to do with them (don't have an amplifier with old-fashioned speaker wire connectons or any amplifier in the house right now). I'll use the google so I can figure out what an optical-coax thingy is!

If I can get Rachel on Appletv, then I'm good! I know I can download her video podcast to my Iphone 5 but it is too small to watch her on.

      •  Most modern amps can connect digitally to Apple TV (1+ / 0-)

(with the exception of extremely cheap or insanely expensive ons).   Look for digital input (TOSLINK they call it.)

In my case I have an older amp (1990s Carver) that is quite good but has no digital input.     It required a converter box to make an analog amplifier work with a digital signal, but I was also able to take advantage of the fact that digital signals can be sent a long way with little loss, so I put the amp for the house speakers on the first floor while having the apple TV live next to the tv set on the second floor.   They were connected through our cable wiring in the house, which since we don't have cable is just wasted copper otherwise.
