    Collect them from friends and at parties and such, sterilize them, and set them aside to re-use.

    You can carbonate your beverages, bottle them in these former soda bottles until the lids stop sealing (that's about 6 - 10 times), then use the soda bottles as planters or cloches and get "fresh" bottles.

    The worst I've had happen is that the sides split and made a mess when I overcarbonated a bottle.  Usually, I undercarbonate.

    Now, when I yeast carbonate, I've had bottles explode in the heat, which is why I keep them chilled.  A wine cellar, a refrigerator dedicated to keeping beverages chilled, or setting aside a portion of he refrigerator for the bottled sodas would all work to prevent such explosions if using glass beer bottles (and do use beer bottles or bottles rated for sodas).
