    but they do hunt other animal populations pretty heavily. They often target pets, or small animals like goats and chickens.

    They're also expert scavengers and they'll go after garbage before they go after deer.

    There's no animal control in a lot of the rural east. Now, Coyotes do fill an important void, but in certain areas their numbers are dangerously high. One of my friends lives near a rural animal shelter. One of the disturbing things that happens is that people will literally drive up, push animals out of their vehicles, and drive off, expecting the animal shelter staff to come out and chase down the animals. Feral cats are a huge problem in his area as a result.

    We're talking about a family that raises chickens to put food on the table. If they didn't farm a bit, they would starve. So shooting animals like coyotes and feral cats is necessary for some of these families to eat.

    There are important conversations to have about broken ecology, but even in a broken ecology, people have to eat.
