  •  I now realize why this site has so much dissension (0+ / 0-)

over gun issues. Lotsa people know tons of stuff about guns!

Can't we all just be bird-watchers?

In the spirit of thinking of politicians and guns, I googled "Bill Clinton guns"

    Wow. Bill's recent quote:

"“A lot of these people … all they’ve got is their hunting and their fishing,” he told the Democratic financiers. “Or they’re living in a place where they don’t have much police presence. Or they’ve been listening to this stuff for so long that they believe it all.”

Clinton closed his remarks with a warning to big Democratic donors that ultimately many Democratic lawmakers will be defeated if they choose to stand with the president.

“Do not be self-congratulatory about how brave you for being for this” gun control push, he said. “The only brave people are the people who are going to lose their jobs if they vote with you.”

I would be remiss if I didn't cite Obama's SF fundraiser gaffe where he dropped the suggestion "All they've got is god and guns" (or something to that effect) I guess we have come full circle.

Really. Let's just tell the south they won the Civil War.

I googled "bill clinton guns" and did not find what you said here -

Clinton closed his remarks with a warning to big Democratic donors that ultimately many Democratic lawmakers will be defeated if they choose to stand with the president.

“Do not be self-congratulatory about how brave you for being for this” gun control push, he said. “The only brave people are the people who are going to lose their jobs if they vote with you.”

The closest thing I found was this on Alex Jones' web site and we all know how he rolls.
Speaking to Democrat donors from the business world, Clinton said of gun owners: “A lot of these people live in a world very different from the world lived in by the [politicians] proposing these [gun control measures].” He went to intimate that these worlds are increasingly in conflict, and that the gun control push could be setting Democrats up for a long fall with a hard landing.

Clinton warned that gun owners cannot be “patronized” and that it’s a mistake to “[look] down your nose at them.”

As he spoke, it was clear that Clinton thinks Obama may be overplaying his hand, giving birth to a reinvigorated Tea Party movement that is already diminishing votes for Democrats in 2014. In hopes of stopping this momentum shift, Clinton warned that the tactics Obama used to win in southern states like Florida has to be employed now, as “that’s the only way [Democrats] will ever be able to even up votes in the midterms as [issues like guns] come up.”

The bottom line: Democrats who know history know that this new gun control push is not going to end well at the polls.

On other sites reporting on this like HP, Politico and others, Clinton was obviously warning those on the side of gun control not to patronize those who come from a different mind set, to understand where their view point comes from and to be aware that it is those who care deeply about an issues that go to the polls.

Do you have a link to the piece that you quoted?

And even if he is here, sometimes you have to do the right thing, even if it may be politically risky.

As for "patronizing," I prefer "fucking angry beyond description that anyone in his right mind would be against background checks and bans on assault weapons."

If that pisses off Walter Kirn, Dick Cheney, Wayne Lapierre or other gun fetishists (oops, patrionizing, I guess).  Too bad.

Was Obama patronizing to say he skeet-shot?  To release the photo showing he really did it?

And why dredge up "bitter, clinging" again from 5 years ago?

There's no winning with these zealots.  The sorriest thing I ever saw was John Kerry wading in boots shooting ducks in Ohio just before the 2004 election, trying to show he's a gun guy.

No, don't patronize.  But don't cower either.

Sorry, but that doesn't sound like something Bill Clinton would say.

Democratic Leaders must be very clear they stand with the working class of our country. Democrats must hold the line in demanding that deficit reduction is done fairly -- not on the backs of the elderly, the sick, children and the poor.
