  •  Hard to play the victim? (15+ / 0-)

Israel has been doing that for quite a long while, more or less successfully. The question is, how much longer?

I just don't see the endgame that Israelis envisage. There doesn't seem to be any way out of the path they are on, nor any other path that is politically possible for them.

To what extent is Israel dependent on US support? To what extent is the USA mired in the problems caused by Israel's intransigence? How far are we willing to go, to support an Israel that is becoming increasingly immoral, vis a vis the Palistinians?

I don't pretend to know. But surely Israelis themselves must see dark clouds gathering on their horizons. What exactly are they betting on, or hoping for? Do they envisage a West Bank Israel utterly devoid of Palestinians, or what? Do the Settlers really believe they can get away with their kind of blatant theft, right under the eyes of the international community?

Perhaps they do, and perhaps they can. As long as they have Uncle Sam's blessing, many things are possible.

Do people really not see what the endgame is? Israel doesn't see any good solutions - Gaza is cut off and they have no interest in it anymore, so it's gone - they'll just have to bomb it every now and then to keep down the rockets.
Eventually, they are expecting the government of Jordan to fall - it's a minority government and those generally do not last. The portions of the West Bank that have a lot of Arabs will be incorporated into Jordan and Israel will keep the rest.
Unlikely? Perhaps, but they are not going to pull back to the Green Line and nor should they, so that's the best long term solution out there.

spread of a urban area across a border takes with it the right of one of the countries involved to claim sovreignty over that part of the other into which the city has spread, and the further right to evict by military force the prior residents of the other side. Laredo and El Paso would never do that. Nor the part of the strip urban area between Seattle and Vancouver.
