  •  I have to comment ...The label PTSD is being (7+ / 0-)

thrown around like it is something that is so violent no one can survive and could cause more suicides and that
the stigma that goes with the illness can be as traumatic as the illness.
As DaNang said, a ptsd patient is no more prone to commit violence than a non ptsd patient.  A flashback does not last for hours and days.  It is in the moment.  A psychotic break can happen to vets and non vets alike
A person suffering from ptsd tends to turn their illness inward.  They can get angry quicker or self medicate but the actual intent to do violence on another person is less likely than a person who has not had to deal with the overwhelming guilt that most of the time goes with combat ptsd.
There is something always more than just PTS when this sort of thing happens.  The person who kills like this is either misdiagnosed IMO or has other issues.   This like the man from Ga and Alabama is not typical ptsd.

The bad part of all of this is the cray vet stigma that broadstrokes all veterans which is bullshit.  it was BS then and it is BS now.  Yes veterans suffering from this disorder have many social setbacks including anger, but not the kind that kills you.. ( the kind that one will bust in a wall and then go to bed for a week feeling stupid) or drink too much, or have difficulty in relationships because of their almost isolation periods.   I worry about the returning stigma of crazy vet...

The diarist is just reporting but the truth is most combat vets are AGAINST violence on another person.. They have been there,,,Done that... and not feeling too good over it.

    •  Also, just to add on (0+ / 0-)

for clarity for anyone who is still confused:  all kinds of people suffer from PTSD, it's not limited to people involved in war or veterans returning from war.
