  •  I've seen some surprises in Comm Spot myself. (12+ / 0-)

I had originally assumed, like you, that such diaries were generally 'rescued' because they were worth a read, and, if they didn't specifically build community, at least didn't snipe at the community or members thereof.

I was disabused of such a notion when a truly bizarre rant of a diary was rescued after the diarist had spent several comments insulting my intelligence for daring to make one neutral comment in the thread below that he/she apparently didn't agree with.  And to add insult, the person who 'rescued' it then actually tipped the insult-filled comments the diarist had made towards me, and told me that rescue was simply based on 'good writing'.  I've been rather cynical about the nature of 'rescue' ever since, seeing it as being, at least to some 'rangers' simply a way to bump the diaries of people they personally like.

that CS (or DK3 "rescue rangers") was tasked with a focus on community-building diaries. It seemed more - theoretically - to be a place to spotlight good writing that generates discussion but that may be overlooked for one reason or another (new or under-read diarist or whathaveyou). In either case, this one certainly seems an odd pick.

what I was told as well, but the diary to which I was referring was 'good writing' only in a truly academic sense, in that it adhered to one specific genre of rhetoric well.  It was obtuse to the vast majority of writers who hadn't studied that one specific little field of literature, though.  With the name change on DK4, I think 'community' in 'community spotlight' became a bit of a misnomer.  The recc list, as bizarre as it gets at times, is probably far closer to a spotlight chosen by the actual community, rather than one specific in-group.

Not very pleasant when that happens. The best that can be said for those kinds of diaries is that they "provoke discussion" -- rather in the way that a sneery, poison-pen hitpiece certain "provokes discussion" among the readers it contemptuously skewers.
