is that he discussed rifle shooting with a rifle team member in this excerpt:

Obama told the TCU team that he, too, practiced shooting with a rifle. "He said he practiced with the Secret Service," said Riford, who graduated from TCU in May and now works in Fort Worth.
And then in a different excerpt, also talking with a rifle team member, he mentioned his skeet shooting:
Scherer wrote that President Obama asked her in which sport she competed. When Scherer told him she was a rifle shooter, he joked about his experiences with skeet shooting.
Either the diary or the articles didn't make clear that he does both. Also, kind of weird that he asked a RIFLE team member what sport she competed in (unless he was asking which specific rifle event she competed in, but her answer seems to eliminate that possibility).

Obviously, none of this means anything in the greater scheme of things and I'm sure he knows the difference between a shotgun and rifle, but there are some minor contradictions here that I can't really explain.

He didn't just host the rifle team. He hosted something like 17 NCAA Championship teams in one day. Hence he had to ask "where are the sharpshooters from TCU?" when he was speaking to all of the teams at once.

Everyone showed up in formal attire, so when he spoke to an individual one-on-one, he would have likely to ask which of the NCAA championship  teams they belonged to, since there were a lot of them there.
