    This is very much true. Almost all political science research shows that the natl economy is the most important factor, and that state economies only add a small bit of explanatory value. And only some studies have shown that "small bit" to be statistically significant at all.

      Reagan won by signfiicantly less in Iowa in 1984 than nationally, and Dukakis won the state easily in 1988.  All this was because the recession that hit the country in the early 80s didn't end in Iowa's farm economy as the rest of the country healed.

      But the pain in Iowa in the 80s was acute and lasting, not unlike the national recession since 2008.
