Nonwhites tend to reject the party's basic let-them-eat-cake ideology much more than whites do. Polling data consistently show they are far less generically anti-government and more supportive of specific big spending programs than whites are. Even if the GOP were to cut out the covert (and in some cases overt) racial and xenophobic appeals, they will likely still overwhelmingly lose the nonwhite vote until they move closer to the center on economic issues.

But where does the party's "let them eat cake" ideology come from? Racism:

The racism by itself matters a lot and closes the door on the GOP's ability to get more votes from people of color.

Trust me, it matters.  The birtherism and other myriad attacks on Obama's patriotism, his legitimacy, his Americanism, a lot of us hear and read those things knowing that's exactly what these people think of me, think of us.  And the key to this is the GOP establishment reaction:  total silence.

The fact is bigots and bigotry are welcome and embraced in the Republican Party.  It's OK to be racist, xenophobic, a religious bigot.  It's impolitic to say some things out loud in public, but only impolitic, nothing worse than that.  It's still perfectly OK or think and feel that way and share those things in more private chats!

      That's the Republican Party.
