  •  I've certainly never seen you as (4+ / 0-)

an adversary, and I hope you don't see me as one, SJ.

I will say, from my perspective, that it gets annoying (and disappointing) to have people literally accuse me of murder, and of being a member of a militia out to "smoke da prez" if you know what I mean. Yes, I have had people here say that. And I consider myself to be fairly reasonable on the topic.

It's disappointing because to me, being liberal means being open-minded, even willing to hear out points of view that may seem disagreeable, but using reason & logic to seek common ground.

After being in Iraq, I can certainly see why people would want to ban guns (or all weapons, for that). I'm more sympathetic to their outlook that I was a few years ago, when I would have dismissed them all as, well, insert expletive here. But I can at least see their desire for a violence-free or violence-reduced world as a nice dream, even if I also don't see it as realistic given the nature of the human animal.

We are, however, superior to animals in that we can master our passions and direct & control our desires, and so for me that means putting requirements for training, storage, licensing, etc on gun owners. A bit of responsibility is not too much to ask. But then, neither is a bit of civility, too.
