    I've had a couple of people tease me ("That's so dumb, you'll have to shovel three times"), but shoveling 6-8 inches three times is easier than shoveling two feet all at once. And I lay salt to prevent ice.

      ... to make sure to shovel before walking on any sidewalks or steps.  It's so much harder to shovel after being compressed that way.

        A sturdy outdoor broom can loosen that up, though.
