many opiate addicts in this country did not become addicts thru choice. Many have been prescribed narcotics for legitimate medical needs, and became addicted because biology always tops will power. We need to change our prescribing rules. It is not a matter of locking up all the pain meds, it is about making sure no patient has access to narcotics for more than 14 days without being educated to the lasting and destructive force of opiate addiction. This could be accomplished by making sure those who require narcotic pain relief attend regular educational sessions where they can see first hand, thru direct contact with opiate addicts, what can happen if they continue to take pain meds. Many chronic pain patients would opt for alternative therapies if they had to confront their possible future if they remain on the narcotic pain medication.
