  •  In the east coast blackout in the 1960s (12+ / 0-)

(yes I am that old) I was stuck on a crowded NYC subway under the river between Harlem and the Bronx going home from work. Someone said after we sat there a very long time that the power had failed all over the city, someone else then said, not very helpfully, maybe it was a nuclear attack (people worried about that sort of thing back then). Someone then smashed a window in the subway to get out.

The conductors and the driver handled it all brilliantly. The unloaded us all and had one light at the front off a long, long line of people and one at the back and everyone had a hand on the shoulder of the person in front of them. I did have  fleeting thought of what happens if the power suddenly comes back on. We walked the equivalent of 6 or 8 blocks in the absolute pitch dark where those two lights seemed incrdibly bright if far away. There was an emergency light on in the station we walked to -- then up and out onto the streets to walk home back across the bridge to the Bronx.

I was in my early 20s and that was about 46 or 47 years ago.

We have only just begun and none too soon.
