  •  Worst blackout: Hurricane Betsy (6+ / 0-)

It was in early September 1965.  I was a little kid, and my family was living in the New Orleans area.  I'll never forget sitting up in my parents' bedroom the night the storm hit.  I was listening to the wind howling outside.

Then suddenly, all the lights went out, and I reached for my mother in the dark.  Eventually I fell asleep, and when I woke up the next morning, we had no power (which meant no A/C), and all the streets were flooded.  People were getting around in pirogues.  I don't remember how long we were without power, but I think it was a couple of weeks.  It was hot, dark, and sticky in the house at night.

We did have one advantage, though.  Ours was one of the few houses on the block that had a gas stove and oven, so my mother could still cook.  That proved useful as she tried to cook all the food in the freezer before it spoiled.
