  •  Yes, but the Diocese of Massachusetts (11+ / 0-)

is also home to three very famous and very Anglo-Catholic parishes: Church of the Advent, St. John the Evangelist Bowdoin St (my home church) and All Saints', Ashmont. Of the three, only St. John's is theologically progressive. All three are "higher" than Rome. ;)

    •  I've been curious about the Church of the Advent (4+ / 0-)

It's a quite well known uber-higher-than-high church, but it is theologically conservative?

      •  Yes, but my friend Daphne was a while back (12+ / 0-)

installed as Deacon there (she had been formerly assigned to St. John's) and the fact that there is female clergy around was a BIG step. Advent has been quite controversial in its conservatism, because many of its most prominent leaders--for a long time--have been gay. Advent is coming into the 21st century slowly but surely. It is a beautiful church indeed, and they do great liturgy. I prefer St. John's because though they are very high--and I mean incense every week, Solemn High Mass, plainchant (we even sing the creed in plainchant a capella)--it has a long history of complete congregational participation. Its Schola Cantorum is legendary and was, for 50 years, led by Everett Titcomb. In the spirit of full disclosure, I was not only a parishioner there for years but also served as Director of Music and Organist. So I'm a little biased. But St. John's is about 80 percent LGBT and most of the Rectors since they became a parish (after they were a mission of the SSJE for a hundred years ) have either been women or gay men.

There is no hope for Ashmont. Sadly. It's architect Ralph Adams Cram's (long-time St. John's parishioner) crown jewel.
