  •  Interesting dichotomy (3+ / 0-)

between altruistic caring and competitive urge. Instinctive love for a baby only lasts so long, and once baby's personality insists on expression a tension registers immediately.

A lot of Freud has been mothballed but I respect his observation that love and erotism are related. And with erotism comes competition and territorial attitudes. In a culture like ours where most people feel the need to sublimate their erotic feelings, the underlying primal feelings seek another outlet.

I think a lot of mass murderers are for one reason or another completely cut off from their sexuality. The inchoate revenge fantasy has a parallel with that of the person driven to secret sexual behaviors. Given that this behavior is the exclusive province of men, it makes sense to wonder about gender confusion, which is difficult enough for the well-adjusted person to contend with. I've long been convinced that the 9/11 suicide attackers were unconsciously motivated by gender confusion, which had no outlet, and led to immensely hostile self-hatred which sought satisfaction through literal explosion of the self.

Mind you this is purely speculative unsubstantiated spit-balling here. I'm just a guy in his underwear for whom tapping a keyboard is one half-step above flinging monkey-poo at a wall.
