  •  I am so depressed... I live in Kansas... (12+ / 0-)

and it's just amazing to see these fools run our state into the ground. I live in an area that boasted of some of the best schools in the country. Now, class sizes are exploding and arts funding has been cut. This is the state that once stood for freedom over tyranny and was a beacon of hope for ex-slaves. Now...? We're the biggest laughing stock in the country. You know it's bad when an episode of Blue Bloods shows an ignorant, hateful, right-wing bigot and they make a point of letting us know he's from Kansas! We now stand for all that is WRONG with this country, and it's embarrassing and beyond frustrating.

I'm advising my 21 year old daughter, who will graduate from KU in a few months, to get the hell out of here and experience the diversity and the excitement that comes from living in a blue state. She's sick of it and I'm sick of it for her. She's had a good time at KU and we all cheer the Rock-Chalk chant, don't get me wrong, but there's so much more out there for her and she needs to see it and experience it. All of her friends are either planning weddings or planning who they will marry. If you don't marry the guy you've been dating since high school and actually decide to date several people before settling down, you're considered a slut by some of these extremely right wing young women. It's really horrible.

But what we've always at least been able to say is that this place has good schools and offers a great education and opportunity. That's out the window when evolution is questioned and school funding gets cut. So, the trade-off of living around a bunch of nutjobs is now gone too!

I know I'm rambling but this is so damn annoying and I'm so sick of these people. They're not BAD people--my friends and neighbors. They're hardworking parents who want the best for their kids. We carpool together and watch the track meets and dance recitals and the whole bit. So, again, these are not bad people. They're just. REALLY. REALLY. IGNORANT.

    •  We should be friends (8+ / 0-)

My daughter worked on the Langston Hughes archive at WSU preparing it for his 100th anniversary. She will be the only student-not professional librarian- credited. I take some credit as she already knew all about Langston Hughes, and what he stood for, from her mother before she even attended WSU.

I also started a post on the pride of Kansas public education but lost it somehow. We have an incredible history of education. We had 10 fricking colleges before we even had a state. KSU is the very first land grant college created- during the middle of the Civil War for heavens sake. It was also the 2nd public university to allow women and opened with 50% women and 50% men. Truly a proud tradition that not many recognize.

I have encouraged all my children to leave the state as soon as they finish  college. I expect my partner and I to follow suit in a decade or so in retirement.  We make enough money that Brownback's changes really don't hurt us, and maybe help, but recognize the rupture in the social contract. So we will pay less than our fair share of taxes until we retire and then we will leave.

Our oldest child is a sub-poverty level full time student diagnosed with a dangerous pre-cancerous condition diagnosed just before her Obamacare coverage expired and there is absolutely no state help available. They would truly let her die, or bankrupt her, as she is single without children.

As our older family dies off, there is nothing here for us anymore. Still I mourn for what we were.

      •  We should indeed be friends! :-) I'm sorry... (0+ / 0-)

to hear about your daughter's illness, and I also mourn for what this state once stood for. It's just embarrassing to claim residency here now.

Also--really cool about your daughter's work on Langston Huges. I wrote my dissertation on his life and work, and as you know, he grew up in Lawrence. Again, another proud fact about this sorry state! Sigh...

    •  Good on you (3+ / 0-)

Even if your daughter comes back to Kansas eventually, she needs to spend some time far the fuck away from it.

Everyone should spend substantial time away from where they grew up.  Because wherever you grew up (assuming you grew up in one place), that was normal for you.  Going places, you see that what other people find normal isn't quite the same.   Sometimes you end up liking their world better.  Sometimes you end up appreciating yours more, and for the right reasons.

But she should definitely get away.  Even if only for a while.

Conservatives need to realize that their Silent Moral Majority is neither silent, nor moral, nor a majority.
