  •  Ca and Ma, each, create more than 300 startups/y. (11+ / 0-)

Not much more to say. The next nearest states create 20 to 30 significant startups. In fact, I would take the economic development zones of the Tennessee Valley, Virginia, Atlantic, California and Mid-west every day over Texas.

    •  Texas isn't creating jobs, really, (7+ / 0-)

Perry is just trying to poach them. Huge difference.

Louise Story has written a great series of articles for the NYT on state tax incentives to businesses (or, if you want to look at it another way, corporations playing states and municipalities against one another, threatening to leave or to not locate there unless generous subsidies and tax breaks are given - kinda like extortion). Not surprisingly, Texas leads the country in trying to buy jobs. Turns out to be not much to brag about - many of the jobs are low-paying, and the cost per job in lost revenue to the state makes this policy truly ridiculous. Meanwhile, those of us who were already here see our costs rise due to the influx of California refugees, and our schools crumble as the GOP here slashes public spending.

The Fresh Air interview with Story on NPR is also very much worth a listen.
