    That a Constitutional Amendment passed that was truly controversial was, IMO, Women's sufferage. Every Amendment that has passed since then has been formally rejected by two states or less. (and yes, that includes giving DC Electoral votes and the elimination of the Poll Tax).

    Most of the Proposed Amendments would immediately be rejected by at least that many state legislatures within a month and probably within 3 months, more than enough to keep it from Ever passing. For example, I would expect a Federal Marriage Amendment to get formal rejections by every state legislature that currently has Marriage Equality (with the probable exception of Iowa) plus Rhode Island, New Jersey, Delaware, Illinois, California, Oregon, and Hawaii.
