  •  I often traveled alone (33+ / 0-)

for my job.  Never once did I feel the need to have a male minder.

Some years ago I flew to Chicago with a friend to attend a wedding in Chicago.  We stayed at a famous Chicago hotel and my friend hung out in the room while I attended the wedding. We only had one room key so she kept it in case she wanted to go out while I was gone.

I arrived back at the hotel about 11:30 pm after the wedding and there were tons of people standing outside in evening clothes after attending some kind of reception.  I started walking into the hotel when a security guard stopped me and demanded a room key.  I explained where the key was and he rudely demanded my name and room number, and he shouted this information into a hand-held radio.  Everyone was staring at me and I realized oh my god, this guy thinks I'm a prostitute.  Everyone standing here now thinks I'm a prostitute.  I was dressed appropriately an evening wedding and certainly didn't look sleazy. The guard told me that he had to escort me to the front desk to get another key and that I'd have to provide identification.  It was the most humiliating experience ever.  I can still see all of those people staring at me thinking that they'd just busted a hooker,

I wrote a letter of complaint when I got home and they offered me a free room night. I wrote back and declined.  I had no desire to be treated like a hooker again.

Women who travel unaccompanied by a male are still viewed with suspicion. Now I see in the news that they're trashing this woman with accusations of drug running.  Very sad.

you don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows
