I am a loner by nature and circumstance - I have no significant other, no children, and only one sibling who hates travel.

If I had waited for a travel partner in sync with my interests and my time, I would never have been able to see England, or make 4 wonderful trips to Hawaii, as well as numerous trips within the lower 48 states.

I treasure the memories of those trips. I'm much older now, and may never have the chance to travel again. I wouldn't trade my solo travel experiences for anything.

As for your observations of the special obstacles women alone face when they are in an unfamiliar place, there's no doubt that we are treated differently, and face greater risks. I have been lucky in that regard.

There were a few instances of mild harassment when I was younger, but as I grew older, the responses were more often of pity, which made me almost as angry. Nobody ever seemed to believe that I might choose to travel alone.
