  •  "Back against the wall" is also a good policy (12+ / 0-)

    And teach them (and teach older parents too) that when traveling on foot, EVEN if you are NOT ALONE, if you need to look at the map, or look something up in your phone, or dig something out of your bag, etc. the safe thing to do is put your back(s) up against a wall. That blocks 180 degrees of blind spot against a sudden attack. A predator will find an easier target.

      They were standing in the middle of the sidewalk trying to read a map, looking around, obviously totally lost.  And not paying any attention to what was happening around them.  I walked up to them and asked if they wanted to be mugged, that they might as well have a neon arrow pointing at their heads, and that had I wanted to, I would already have been off down the street with their bags.

      They thought I was rude.  I was.  But they probably were more careful afterward.  At least I hope they were.
