    and it feels super safe as long as it is not cartel controlled areas like the border.  I used to smile and walk cheerfully down the street but have stopped doing that because of cat calls and guys chatting me up being such a nuisance.  However, the people are really friendly and if I had a problem, I'm sure I could find help on the street.  Travelling alone is empowering.

    That being said, there are some horrific places on the border where I would not go.  Femicide is a big problem, without thousands of girls missing, never making it home on their way from work.  That is an isolated case and not at all the norm.  

    The situation with the tourists in Acapulco is tragic.  And they were at their own rented vacation house.
