    ultrasound is necessary to determine gestational age of the  embryo/fetus. In most abortions, that is normally done by internal/external exam. The doctor can palpate the size of the uterus.
    Crafty of them to write the bill to make it sound like it intends to protect women.
    Physical exam very often reveals ectopic pregnancies as well--adequately enough in a woman that has no pain or other symptoms of ectopic pregancy. In a wanted pregnancy, the examining gynocologist establishes gestational age (and also would find out if the pregnancy was ectopic in most cases) by physical exam as well, not by ultrasound
    It is extra. Yes, you will definetely see if the pregnancy is in the wrong place. But in healthy symptomless women such screening would never be done normally at that stage.
