  •  Gotta chime in here as a Tanker Toad. (15+ / 0-)

Major Kong may not have been privy to the "two bomber rule".  Our Navs would be decoding the same message, and then call out the message number ( we knew the meanings of the numbers).  If we were supposed to taxi toward the runwy, he'd yell ( there was a lot of noise going on), "it's a mover!"  We would then wait for two bombers to move.  One bomber could screw up...two at once, probably not.  We were never going to be first out of he chute, because if WE screwed up, causing he nukes to follow us...well, we just weren't going to do that.

"Always allow the bombers to screw up first"

We did the same thing at Barksdale.  When we were all parked on the Christmas tree and all the crews could run to their planes, even though the Buffs were closer to the alert facility, we were almost always ready to go first.  The taxi light on the nose gear for the tankers was the clue to the crew chief that the plane was ready to taxi.  But we always waited to see what the Buffs would do first.

Later when the SAC rev put more Barksdale bombers on alert, the tankers got displaced to the ramp adjacent to the Christmas tree.  Ironically this was almost closer to the runway hold line.  So then, if a tanker crew was together outside the alert facility (like at the squadron) they could easily make to the plane, start, and if it were a mover, make it to he hold line and then have to wait for the Buffs.

After all; we only had to start 4 engines!
