  •  refueling scene (5+ / 0-)

A little dramatic license, perhaps, but still cool to watch.

Refers to a scene earlier in the movie, where Hudson's character spotted Kemeler in just his socks while on alert and asked how long he'd make his crewmates wait while he got his boots on. His reply was his boots were on the plane so he could just go and put them on there if an alert came through... The colonel accepted that reason.

This is an E-3, but illustrates how difficult it must be to keep such huge aircraft in that close formation.

like the AWACS underran the tanker.

He got much too far forward in the refueling envelope, which is why he got the disconnect.

Either the boomer kicked him off or it disconnected automatically because he hit the limit.

So far so good, then he continued to come forwards!

As if that wasn't bad enough, then he pulls that last crazy stunt, obviously scaring everyone involved pretty badly.

It sounded like the boom operator was too busy swallowing his microphone to even call "breakaway".

If the pilot's good, see, I mean if he's reeeally sharp, he can barrel that baby in so low... oh you oughta see it sometime. It's a sight. A big plane like a '52... varrrooom! Its jet exhaust... frying chickens in the barnyard!

sometimes we had extra pilots on board.

Once, while I waiting for my turn at the controls, I went back to the boom pod to watch a C-5 being refueled.

Decided I didn't really like what I saw and went back up front. What I can't see can't scare me.
