  •  I don't think anyone excuses the parents (13+ / 0-)

They have committed a heinous horrible crime.

I think it's just that we are equally appalled by the neighbors that knew it was going on, having not seen him since September, and before that seeing him sleep outside in the cold through last year, rummaging through their trash for food.

Oh, I blame the parents.   They were horrible monsters.   But I blame society as well, because our decision to say that "look out for yourself" means that we're building in the idea that it's not our problem to worry about the issues of others.

But it IS our problem to look after others.   If we have decided that it isn't, then there is no point in a nation, a state, a city.

    •  I'm appalled by the neighbors inaction, too (2+ / 0-)

But I cannot agree that they are equally culpable as the parents. No way.

      •  Wrong phrase (3+ / 0-)

Yes, I understand that .. I should have have used "equal".  In the end, it's the parents who did the terrible act.

I'm trying to think of the word I'm looking for.  More as though the neighbors and others through inaction.. or supplying food and blankets in many ways enabled this to go on so long.   In the months were there was no sign, nothing.

I can't even really put into a single word or phrase how I feel about the community reaction except disgusted.

I think part of why I hold the neighbors in such low esteems is because of this:  the Parents and others in that home have basically now admitted their atrocity and see no harm in it, they have done an evil thing and seem to get it.   The neighbors, however, repeatedly contributed to this and did nothing, and see themselves as above it.

Bad people doing bad things is a disgusting, terrible thing.

But people who hope themselves good allowing bad things to happen knowingly.. I don't even know how to feel about that.

you are not part of the solution, then you are part of the problem.   They are guilty.
