  •  This is a long-term problem. (8+ / 0-)

Every time the mormons don't get their way, they stomp their feet and threaten to leave and the BSA caves in.  Similar problem with the catholics and methodists, but LDS has been, by far, the most intransigent.

The problem with the methodists is that scouting is sponsored by the methodist men's body which is more conservative than the UMC as a whole.

I think the BSA board has reached a tipping point with its corporate members, including the incoming president.  If they don't become more inclusive, they're at risk of losing even more corporate support.  They're also headed toward more conflict with the military now that DADT is ended.

The religious sponsoring bodies are the tail that wags the dog--it's a problem that has been there for decades.

    •  It isn't just Mormons and they don't really stamp (9+ / 0-)

their feet and make this demand.

What they actually do is make a request, if the request isn't honored, they respectfully remove themselves. An example of this is we had a very successful camp that was popular with scouts. The mormon members of the district wanted to increase the religion in the program. The camp director said no, the program was staying as is. They were totally fine with that, and started their own camp.  When they removed their scouts to their own camp the original camp folded because they needed those bodies to keep it going.

The Mormons are a huge population and their dollars make or break the programs. What I am hearing locally is that they are backing off the anti-gay thing and that it was their idea to let each chartered organization make the decision for their troops. The head of BSA is a Mormon.

      •  The result is the same. (5+ / 0-)

The BSA jumps to the LDS's tune.  You can put lipstick on that pig, but it doesn't change anything. I don't care how politely the LDS threatens to leave--they still threaten to leave.  I understand perfectly well how unfailingly polite mormons are--but what good is being polite when your policies are harshly anti-woman and anti-gay. There's a reason why Utah has the highest per capita rate of prescriptions for anti-depressants--it's because of the need to maintain the image that everything is always OK.

with gays but that hasn't kept them from joining amicus briefs supporting both DOMA and Prop 8. So the claims about "backing off" comes down to "you can condemn your gay kids and their 'lifestyle' but it makes us look bad if you boot them out of your house so don't do that. Just hate them behind closed doors."
